At Dink, our primary focus is on creating paddles that offer exceptional playability, durability, and comfort, catering to various player preferences and styles. We felt USAP was limiting our ability to innovate and create a superior product only to cater to a small segment of the market, sanctioned tournaments.

In this explanation, we detail why our pickleball paddles do not carry a USAP certificate. We are committed to transparency and believe it's important for our customers to understand the distinctions between USAP-approved equipment and our specialized offerings.

Poor Experience with USAP Testing

In 2022, we paid a significant amonut of money to have our paddle undergo the approval process.

We passed every test except for the deflection test, which attempts to measure the amount of power a paddle produces. Our paddle failed this test by .001”, which also happens to be the margin of error for the machine.

The machine used to perform this test had not been re-calibrated in approximately a year, so we kindly requested they re-calibrate the machine and re-test the same paddle since the failure was by such a small margin.

Unfortunately, USAP denied our request and made it clear that the only way to re-test was to pay another fee.

While we will give USAP the benefit of the doubt and believe that it was just a misunderstanding, it still felt wrong. It felt like we were scammed.

From that point forward, we focused our efforts on innovating and creating superior paddles that would never undergo USAP testing again.

USAP Approval is Not Necessary for the Majority of Pickleball Players

USAP (USA Pickleball) approval is specifically required for paddles used in sanctioned tournaments, ensuring they meet certain standards set by the governing body. However, this approval does not necessarily indicate the quality or performance of the paddle outside of these regulations.

Considering that only about 0.2% of all pickleball players participate in sanctioned tournaments, the necessity for USAP-approved paddles is limited to a very small fraction of the player base. For nearly all recreational, casual, and enthusiast players, USAP approval is not critical when choosing a paddle. These players can focus on other aspects, such as comfort, durability, power, spin, and personal preference.

While the approval can be important for competitive play, it is not required to enjoy the game at most levels. Players not aiming for sanctioned events can confidently select paddles without worrying about USAP approval. This allows for a broader range of paddle choices that might better suit their individual playing style and needs.

Commoditization of USAP-approved Paddles

The commoditization of USAP-approved paddles means that all paddles meeting these standards are essentially the same regarding their power and spin capabilities. The USAP imposes strict regulations to ensure that no paddle exceeds specific performance metrics, resulting in a level playing field. This standardization implies that, in theory, all USAP-approved paddles should deliver identical performance characteristics, eliminating significant differences in their technical capabilities.

This uniformity can stifle innovation, as manufacturers are constrained by the same performance limits, making it challenging to develop paddles with unique features that enhance play. While this standardization ensures fairness and consistency in competitive play, it also means that players and manufacturers might feel restricted by the lack of diversity in paddle performance.

As a brand, we aim to distinguish ourselves by offering paddles that go beyond the basic requirements, providing unique designs, superior materials, and ergonomic features that enhance the overall playing experience. At Dink, we aim to create a distinctive identity that resonates with players who seek more than just compliance with USAP standards. By emphasizing these additional qualities, we strive to offer products that stand out in a crowded market of seemingly identical paddles.

Restriction on Innovation

USAP limits on power and spin are significant restrictions that hinder innovation in pickleball paddle design. These regulations prevent manufacturers from experimenting with advanced materials and technologies that could enhance the paddle’s performance.

Such restraints mean that innovative companies cannot fully explore the potential of new pickleball paddle materials that could offer players improved control, power, noise, and durability. At Dink, we believe that continuous improvement in paddle design and materials is crucial for maintaining competitive advantage and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the sport. Without the ability to innovate freely, companies are forced to adhere to traditional designs, which can limit overall progress and excitement in the game.

These restrictions impact not only the manufacturers but also the players, who miss out on the benefits of advanced equipment. For us, innovating is key to providing top-performing products that meet the evolving needs of players. Therefore, we don’t restrict ourselves from getting a USAP certificate. We aim to take a significant leap forward in paddle performance and overall enjoyment of the game.
